Your mind races ahead and braces for the worst-case scenario. It makes predictions about everything that could go wrong and tries to come up with never-ending solutions to avoid a negative outcome. Unexpected changes to plans are a nightmare. It obsesses over the past with a critical eye. Dread and nervousness can make it impossible to slow down and just be.
When left unchecked, anxiety tends to leave you feeling overwhelmed and your life, small. Avoidance brings relief, but holds you back from opportunities and experiences you’d have otherwise enjoyed. Sometimes you discover that it “wasn’t that bad” by diving headfirst into the fear and trying to push the worrisome thoughts aside, but this strategy can also leave you flooded and more reluctant to step out in the future. Reassurance-seeking works for a time, but it’s never enough and tends to strain relationships. Perfectionism and control are yet other attempts to manage anxiety, but inevitably fall short and you’re left feeling exhausted by the never-ending chase.
The reality is that you do not have the kind of control that you wish to have. No matter how careful you are or how much you overthink, “bad” things sometimes happen.
Self-help tools, challenging anxious thoughts, and practicing grounding strategies are helpful to an extent, but can leave you feeling frustrated or discouraged when your nervous system remains on overdrive.
These techniques, though useful, only teach you to manage the symptoms, and much of what keeps us stuck in anxious loops is more deeply rooted in our being.
In your therapy, we will gently delve deeper into the layers of your anxiety. In doing so, you will come to better understand yourself and the heart of your symptoms. This can help you to listen to the important signals of your nervous system and discern your inner-wisdom from the dizzying voices of anxiety. You can learn to care for yourself in a way that quiets your anxious mind, know how to set yourself up for success when you step out of your comfort zone, and discover greater peace of mind to engage in your life the way you desire.
